Sabbatical

Sabbatical
For Darren 140717

What on earth, a sabbatical
for one to whom ‘Sabbath’ reeks fanatical?
It’s life on a menu, read right to left
The price determines the campus radical.
So he’s off to the hallowed learning halls
Or is it mom’s knee, where he’ll cry, nay bawl?
They mewl, “Lucky dude, why it’s pay for no work!
What better?” But ah! In the dross there lurk
hidden costs, the shame of deception amid
the Calvinist tenets of Zipangu, and the id,
so when of a wintery workday morn
you rise, lad,
with nought on your feeble mind but scorn
for the workplace, the drudg’ry, the demeaning task
why then there is but one thing we humbly ask:
don’t forget us, we are the true meaning of life;
we’re the unfettered laughter that plays the wee fife.
You’ll be back, but we’ll be a year’s labor older
And you’ll be all fattened by polk without polder.
Oh man! You’ll whimper like praying in church
as from one bar to ‘nother you cravenly lurch.
So dinna forget while you’re morally slidin’
there’s us fellas here think you need a good hidin’!

Bike vs. keitora

Here’s the details of my November 7 adventure.
Riding the 7.7 km home from KUT, I was within smelling distance of the coffee pot, and rounding this curve

curve

when out of nowhere a keitora (light truck)

keitora
cut the corner and knocked me flying into the field a meter plus below the road.

bike down

Police came. Kyoko came. I was walking but not unfoggy. The ambulance came. (Can’t go to emergency unless you’re in an ambulance.) Xrays. A few days of feeling fine. Then symptoms emerged. None serious.

Two weeks later more xrays. Torn rotator cuff (didn’t know I had one). Probably no surgery. Now, three weeks down the road, I am more or less normal (was I before?) but still lying down when I get the chance. Is that cat lives minus one?
